Benjamin Huynh [he:she:they] (FR/BE) – 1996 –
is a multidisciplinary visual artist and graduate of ERG (École de Recherche Graphique, Brussels). Initially drawn to performance practices, their artistic research gradually expanded towards painting, installation, and textile-based work.
Their practice challenges the traditional boundaries of painting through concepts such as network painting and transitive painting, which seek to reconsider the historical hierarchies embedded within the medium. Benjamin Huynh’s work unfolds within this transformative framework, exploring the potential of painting as a horizontal, interconnected, and relational practice. Their artistic approach functions as a platform for research and experimentation, engaging with themes such as queer identities, selfie culture, questions of display, as well as a positive approach of space.
Currently, they are conducting a research project supported by the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, focusing on the intersections between natural dyeing and painting techniques. This research explores mordant painting, plant-based pigment production, and the development of hybrid practices that connect contemporary painting with traditional material knowledge, ecological processes, and artisanal techniques.
